Three Ways of Living: Hearing the Shepherd’s Voice

1. The First Way: Following the Wrong Voice

Jesus warns us that there is a voice that does not lead us toward life at all. He calls this voice the thief—the one who steals, kills, and destroys.

This voice rarely appears dangerous.
It sounds enticing.
It feels exciting.
It promises fulfillment but never provides it.

It is like the ancient story of Ulysses and the Sirens in The Odyssey. The Sirens sang with voices so beautiful that sailors believed they were being drawn toward wisdom and delight. But anyone who followed their call ended up wrecked on the rocks.

When we chase after the wrong voice, we end up the same way—hurt, lost, and far from the joy we hoped for.

Outside the Good Shepherd’s fold, we encounter cheap imitations of joy that dissolve the moment we try to grasp them. They cannot sustain us.

We try to build our own path, secure our own identity, and follow whatever seems most appealing in the moment. But Jesus reminds us:
Only one voice leads to life.

2. The Second Way: Staying Frozen in Fear

Sometimes we manage to avoid the thief’s voice—and that is good.
But then fear whispers to us.

Fear convinces us that staying where we are is safer than stepping into something new.
It traps us inside the pen.

We shrink our world down to whatever feels manageable.
We call it “being careful” or “playing it safe,” but really, fear is shepherding us instead of Jesus.

When fear leads us, we survive but never thrive.
We exist, but we don’t live abundantly.

Jesus calls us out of fear—not into danger, but into abundance.
Yet fear tells us that the pen is better than the pasture.
And when we let fear guide our decisions, we miss the life God intends for us.

As John reminds us, even when Jesus spoke plainly, some people didn’t understand His invitation.
We often do the same:

  • Jesus speaks, and we don’t understand.
  • Jesus calls, and we hesitate.
  • Jesus invites, and we cling to fear.

Fear creates a life of survival, not a life of abundance.

3. The Third Way: Following the Shepherd’s Voice

This is the way Jesus longs for us to choose.

The Shepherd’s voice is trustworthy—steady, gentle, and true.
He leads through the gate.
He leads toward purpose.
He leads toward community, peace, and grace.

And the life He offers?
It includes everyone.

We cannot allow different church traditions, styles of worship, or opinions about what “real Christians” look like to divide us. Jesus never created those lines. The real Christians are those who follow His voice.

Christianity is not defined by:

  • what you wear,
  • whether you prefer hymns or praise music,
  • which day you worship,
  • or the gender of your pastor.

What brings someone into the Christian family—the fold—is simply following the Shepherd’s voice.

Inside that fold we discover joy, contentment, and peace.

And even though Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth, He never forces us.
He does not push us with fear or shame.
He simply leads—and invites us to follow.

His call is not only for those already inside the church walls.
Jesus says, “I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also.”
God’s grace is always going ahead of us, preparing hearts to recognize His voice.

Being in the fold brings unity, not because we are strong, but because the One who holds us is strong.

Living in Grace in a Broken World

Following Jesus does not mean life will be easy or pain-free.
A life in grace is not a life without suffering.

We live in a world shaped by sin, brokenness, and struggle.
But God never inflicts pain on us.
God grieves when we grieve and walks with us through every valley.

Romans 5:1–5 reminds us that God transforms our suffering—not by removing it, but by meeting us in it.
Suffering produces perseverance.
Perseverance produces character.
Character produces hope.
And hope never puts us to shame, because God pours His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Even in the toughest moments, we may catch glimpses of the Kingdom—a peace, a moment of joy, a sense of God’s presence that reminds us the Shepherd is close.

The Three Ways Before Us

Every day, we are given a choice:

1. Follow the thief
and chase what is shiny but empty.

2. Stay frozen in fear
and shrink life down to something safe but small.

3. Or follow the Shepherd
who leads us to green pastures, abundant life, and grace.

The Shepherd is calling.
Gently.
Patiently.
Faithfully.

Not forcing you.
Not shaming you.
Simply calling your name.

May we quiet the noise, listen for His voice, and follow Him into the life He longs to give us.

Amen.
